Shawn P. K. Huston

As a second-generation California native, Mr. Huston has lived in Southern California most of his life. He experienced the business world first-hand working for several banks while achieving his undergraduate degree in business administration with an emphasis in finance. After graduating cum laude, Mr. Huston left branch management and banking to work as a real estate broker while also attending law school.

While in law school at Thomas Jefferson School of Law, Mr. Huston acted as a mediator for the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission and the Chula Vista small claims court.

He also interned at the San Diego Alternate Public Defenders office.Mr. Huston was a founding member of his law school's negotiation team, and he was also on the school's mock trial team. Mr. Huston received the highest grade for many classes, including Professional Property, Wills and Trusts, Advanced Trial Advocacy, and Mediation Theory.

Mr. Huston is a certified mediator with scores of successful mediations under his belt. Immediately after graduating cum laude from law school and being admitted to the State Bar of California, he was hired as a family law attorney to handle dissolution proceedings (divorce). Additionally, Mr. Huston served as a substituting supervisor for the San Diego Volunteer Lawyer Program's domestic violence clinic. This clinic prepares and represents clients who, as victims of domestic abuse, seek restraining orders.

In 2006, Mr. Huston left San Diego and became a prosecutor for the county of Madera. As the prosecutor in charge of the traffic court, he has handled hundreds of driving under the influence cases. Mr. Huston later became the welfare fraud prosecutor and the rural crimes prosecutor for Madera County.

Mr. Huston was eventually transferred to become the drug court prosecutor, and finally, the lead deputy district attorney for the Sierra Courthouse. In this position, Mr. Huston handled and litigated many cases ranging from driving under the influence to violent felonies (including assault, burglary, hate crimes, and attempted murder) for the eastern half of Madera County.

After three years as a deputy district attorney, Mr. Huston returned to Southern California and worked as a senior associate to several law firms in San Diego. He continues to practice criminal law and is an active attorney with San Diego County's Office of Assigned Counsel.

He has broadened his expertise in the civil arena by becoming proficient in bankruptcy litigation and returning to mediation and family law. He also represents businesses and business owners in corporate and civil litigation. To date, Mr. Huston has taken over ten cases to jury with favorable results.

Mr. Huston has evolved into an excellent trial litigator where he draws on his mediation and negotiation skills to bring cases to a swift resolution when possible. However, he is not afraid to take a case to trial, and he zealously advocates for his clients when the opposition is unreasonable or intransigent (or both).

As the lead trial litigator for Huston McCaffrey, LLP, Mr. Huston is currently admitted to practice in the courts of the State of California and all four federal United States District Courts of California. He is active in the community and is on the board of directors for the Tom Homann LGBT Law Association of San Diego.
